Spring Holidays

 Purim

  • Purim is a festive Jewish holiday where we celebrate the Persian Jews deliverance from the evil Haman by the heroic Queen Esther. It is celebrated with dressing up, and satirical performances, all recalling the evil decrees of Haman that were ultimately overturned.
  • At the U of R , we read the megillah (the scroll telling Esther's story), bake hamantaschen, and celebrate with a big Purim party.

Passover

  • Passover celebrates the biblical exodus from Egypt, but its focus on freedom in general has earned it a special place on the Jewish calendar. More Jews participate in a seder than any other Jewish ritual.
  • Hillel offers free seders for students both the first and second nights of Passover.  Students prepare their own Haggadahs and lead the seders.

Yom Ha’Atzmaut

  • Yom Ha'Atzmaut is Israel's Independence Day.  On campus we celebrate with Israeli flags, music, and, of course, food.
